Essential Study Areas for API 1104:
- Section 5 (Procedure Qualification): Know Table 1 (tests required) and Section 5.4 (Essential Variables). If you change an essential variable, you must re-qualify the procedure.
- Section 6 (Welder Qualification): Pay attention to the "Groups." A welder qualifying on a certain diameter or thickness only qualifies for a specific range.
- Section 9 (Acceptance Standards): This is the most common area for questions. You must be able to quickly find the limits for IP, IF, ESI, and ISI.
- Appendices: Do not ignore Appendix B. In-service welding (welding on a pipeline that is currently flowing) has very different requirements for cooling rates and burn-through prevention.
