AWS CWI Part-A: The "Closed-Book" Challenge
The AWS CWI Part-A exam is a high-speed, 150-question test that you must complete in 120 minutes (2 hours). This gives you exactly 48 seconds per question. Because it is closed-book, your success depends entirely on your ability to recall definitions, metallurgical principles, and welding symbols instantly.
Key Domains Covered
While the exam covers many topics, the bulk of your questions will come from these five critical areas:
- Welding Processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW): Understanding variables like polarity, shielding gases, and equipment setup.
- NDE & Inspection (VT, PT, MT, RT, UT): Knowing which method is best for surface vs. volumetric flaws and identifying symbols.
- Welding Metallurgy: Understanding how carbon content affects hardenability and the formation of the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ).
- AWS A3.0 Definitions: Mastering the "language of welding" to avoid trick questions.
- Safety: Standard practices according to ANSI Z49.1.
How to Prepare for CWI Part-A
Preparation for Part-A is a marathon, not a sprint. Follow this three-step strategy to ensure you are ready for exam day:
1. Master AWS A3.0 Standard Terms
Most students lose points because they use "field slang" instead of official AWS terminology. For example, don't say "penetration" when the exam is looking for "Joint Penetration" or "Root Penetration." Study the A3.0 dictionary until the terms are second nature.
2. Learn to Read Welding Symbols (AWS A2.4)
Symbols can be worth 10–15% of your total score. You must be able to identify:
- Arrow side vs. Other side.
- Intermittent weld spacing (Pitch vs. Length).
- Supplementary symbols (Field weld, All-around, Melt-thru).
3. Take Timed Mock Exams
Knowledge isn't enough; you need speed. Use the quiz above and set a timer. If you are spending more than 45 seconds on a question, skip it and come back. Developing a rhythm is the only way to finish all 150 questions before the clock runs out.
Exam Day Tips
- Answer Everything: There is no penalty for guessing on the CWI exam. Never leave a bubble blank.
- Watch the Metric/U.S. Units: The exam often provides both. Ensure you aren't misreading a value just because the units are different from what you use at work.
- Focus on the Tail: In welding symbols, always check the tail for specific process requirements or references to notes.
